L-Tryptophan (120 caps)

L-Tryptophan (120 caps)

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid needed for proper body functioning. It naturally increases the serotonin levels in the brain & body. The antidepressants, Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Effexor, Serzone, Luvox, Remeron, etc, unnaturally increase serotonin levels and have many significant side effects. Do not take Tryptophan together with full doses of these drugs or you may increase the serotonin too much & create unpleasant symptoms. Consult your doctor before taking Trytophan if you are taking antidepressants.*

Protein foods contain amino acids. The highest dietary sources of tryptophan are chicken, tuna, soybeans, beef, lamb, turkey, halibut, shrimp, salmon, snapper, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and bananas. However, to insure adequate levels of tryptophan in the brain it may be necessary to supplement tryptophan as a free form amino acid. It is ready for utilization by the body just as it is without requiring any digestive and metabolic conversions as with the dietary proteins.

Tryptophan is used as a natural treatment for low moods, sleeplessness, nervousness, carbohydrate craving or other states of disordered appetite, poor mental health, PMS, excessive alchol use, other addictive states, and aggression.*

Tryptophan was used by millions of people for many years & is safe. It was removed from the market because of problems caused by a contaminant from a Japanese supplying company. Political reasons kept it off the over-the-counter market, but that has been resolved and it is now again available. We carry a superior grade product from Montiff, a company owned by Don Tyson, one of the worlds amino acid experts.*

The benefits of tryptophan are:

  • The support of feelings of well-being, calm, serenity, relaxation, & concentration*
  • Helps with low moods*
  • Augments light therapy for mental health*
  • A natural sleep aid for occasional sleeplessness*
  • helps with nervousness.
  • Helpful in agitated or mild manic states*
  • May inhibit aggressive behavior.*
  • Reduces carbohydrate cravings, thus aiding in supporting healthy weight*
  • Reduces symptoms of PMS*
  • Reduces the number of tender points, anxiety, pain intensity improves quality of sleep
  • Aids in relief of minor pain*
Part of tryptophan is converted to Vitamin B3, so to ensure greater conversion to serotonin, it is important to be taking a Co enzyme B complex daily during the morning. Part of tryptophan is also converted to melatonin, the sleep supporting, immune supporting hormone.*

For more details about tryptophan, see Dr Slagle's ebook, The Way Up From Down at "The Way Up From Down."

Tryptophan 500 mg is approximately equivalent to 100 mg 5HTP

DIRECTIONS:

  • For occasional sleeplessness or for low moods: 500-3000 mg within 1 hour before bedtime either with water or a small carbohydrate snack (but no protein) or one half of dose 1/2 hour before dinner & the rest at bedtime.*
  • For Daytime Calming: 1-2 of the 500 mg every few hours through the day until calming benefits felt.*
  • For healthy appetite support: 1-2 caps upon arising, mid morning, and mid afternoon.*
  • Dosage for children would be an adjusted fraction using a 150 pound adult as the standard. So a 75 pound child would be on half dose, a 32.5 pound child on quarter dose.* Consult with pediatrician before supplementing under 12.
  • Safe for use in pregnancy, but also follow recommendations at https://www.thewayup.com/conditions/cprenatal.htm*

ALWAYS TAKE TRYPTOPHAN or 5HTP with pyridoxal-5-phosphate to ensure adequate & proper conversion to serotonin rather than conversion to unwanted metabolites. The pyridoxal-5-phosphate does not have to be taken at exactly the same time as tryptophan and is best taken upon arising in the am, or in the day time as can be stimulating if taken at bedtime. Also, be sure to be taking a good multivitamin mineral

Side effects are rare but may be:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • "Hung over" feeling
  • Paradoxical agitation
  • Blood pressure increase only in those who already have high blood pressure of a fluctuating type
