Vitamin B12 MethylcobalaminDr Slagle prefers the methylated form of Vitamin B12 called Methylcobalamin. This coenzyme form of B12 is the most active form of vitamin B12 in the body, especially the brain and nervous system. Most forms of B12 on the market are cyanocobalamin which is less expensive, but also less effective. Methylcobalamin is essential for cell growth and replication. The liver may not convert cyanocobalamin, the common supplemental form of vitamin B12, into adequate amounts of methylcobalamin which the body needs for proper nerve cell and other functioning.* Methylcobalamin may exert its neuroprotective effects through enhanced methylation, acceleration of nerve cell growth, or its ability to promote healthy homocysteine levels. For methylcobalamin to be available to the brain, it should be allowed to dissolve under the tongue or be taken by injection.* Food vitamin B12 is primarily obtained from animal sources, so vegetarians are particularly prone to deficiency. High dietary sources are: kidney, liver, brain, heart, milk, beef, egg yolk, clams, oysters, salmon & herring.* Special conditions requiring definite supplementation are: pregnancy, breast feeding, intestinal malabsorption, older age, eating disorders, excessive alcohol use, infancy, high vitamin C intake, loss of intrinsic factor , intestinal parasites, removal of all or part of the stomach, low & high thyroid functioning, low parathyroid functioning, & vegetarianism.* When using B12 therapeutically to help with certain conditions(such as known deficiency), it is best to use the Methylcobalamin form, either by injection, sublingually, or both.* For more details about Vitamin B12, see Dr Slagle's Vitamin B12 newsletter* VITAMIN B12 IS NECESSARY FOR:
Measuring levels of vitamin B12 in the blood is not an accurate way to determine B12 status, in that B12 deficiency can exist & patients will respond favorably to taking B12 even when their blood levels were adequate.* SYMPTOMS OF VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY:
