The macula, a tiny area at the center of the retina on the back wall of the eye, is a collection of photoreceptor cells, mostly cone cells, responsible for turning light into color images. Being yellow in color allows the macula to absorb excess blue and ultraviolet light that enter the eye, acting as a natural sunblock or sunglasses for this area of the retina. The yellow color is due to the presence of the macular pigment.

Macular pigment is composed of three carotenoids:
