Folic Acid, Optimized FolateOptimized Folate (L-Methylfolate) is involved in neurotransmitter synthesis and critical enzymatic reactions throughout the body. Folate benefits cardiovascular health and nervous system function, by depleting excess homocysteine, which is a damaging chemical produced in the body. For even more information, please see Dr Slagle's VITAMIN B12/FOLIC ACID/HOMOCYSTEINE newsletter Ordinary folic acid supplements may not deliver the full spectrum of effects received by taking Optimized Folate. This is due to the fact that once ingested, not everyone converts the usual folic acid supplements to their biologically active form called 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Your body does not have to change Optimized Folate to use it. Since it is already in the biologically active form. Recent studies have shown that a significant portion of the population have, genetic enzyme deficiencies which prevent the conversion by methylation of folate to 5-MTHF. This leaves many vulnerable to low blood folate levels and all the problems associated it as listed at Folic Acid . 5-MTHF has been shown to be up to seven times more bioavailable than regular folic acid, thus dramatically raising blood serum folate levels. This greater bioavailability is especially important in people who have a genetic enzyme deficiency since it requires no conversion to become metabolically active. A study of 10 patients with endothelial dysfunction showed complete reversal of endothelial impairment after using 5-MTHF supplementation compared with healthy control patients. Endothelial dysfunction is a physiological dysfunction of normal biochemical processes carried out by the endothelium, the cells that line the inner surface of all blood vessels including arteries and veins (as well as the innermost lining of the heart and lymphatics.). Normal functions of endothelial cells include mediation of coagulation, platelet adhesion, immune function, control of volume and electrolyte content of the intravascular and extravascular spaces. 5-MTHF is able to cross the blood-brain barrier to enhance brain synthesis of acetylcholine?the neurotransmitter associated with memory, which is especially important for people with cognitive difficulties. Studies also show that the effectiveness of 5-MTHF can be further enhanced by co-supplementing with Methylcobalamin (the active form of vitamin B12), Vitamin B6, and Riboflavin.
