Irvingia is an extract from a West African plant that has been shown to help maintain healthy body weight in four ways:
- Reversing Leptin Resistance
The protein hormone Leptin is encoded by the obesity (ob) gene, and has been identified in published research as a principal modulator of body weight and metabolism.
Clinical findings show that the vast majority of overweight people have elevated levels of Leptin due to "Leptin Resistance."
Leptin Resistance occurs when the body fails to transport Leptin past the blood-brain barrier to the hypothalamus.
If brain levels of Leptin are low due to Leptin Resistance, food cravings and weight gain occur because the body believes that it is hungry and goes into a state of continued fat storage. This occurs even if there are high circulating levels of Leptin in the blood.
- Inhibiting Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase(a fat converting enzyme)
Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase is an enzyme that facilitates the conversion of blood glucose into triglycerides that increase adipocyte (fat cells) size. Inhibiting glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase reduces the amount of ingested sugars that are converted to body fat.
- Reducing Carbohydrate Absorption by Inhibiting the Amylase Enzyme
Amylase is an enzyme that converts starch to sugar in the digestive tract. By inhibiting amylase the amount of ingested starches that will be absorbed as sugar are reduced.
For carbohydrates to be fully absorbed, they must be broken down in the digestive tract by the amylase enzyme. Since excess dietary carbohydrates are metabolized to fat, inhibiting their absorption may help in weight management.
- Increasing Adiponectin
Adiponectin is a protein hormone produced and secreted exclusively by adipocytes (fat cells) that regulates the metabolism of lipids and glucose.
Studies show when we have plenty of adiponectin, not only is our insulin production lower, our blood sugar is better controlled, and that decreases our risk of diabetes and heart disease. Furthermore, people who have plenty of adiponectin generally have better controlled weight.
When we gain weight, adiponectin production goes down. Weight that is gained in the belly, as opposed to weight gained more in the hips and thighs, is the weight that dramatically reduces adiponectin production. So, as you gain weight and adiponectin production drops, your weight just gets worse.
Significant Irvingia Study
Consistent findings show multiple beneficial effects of Irvingia. Over a 10 week period, a large study was conducted on overweight and obese people. Participants were randomly divided in two groups. Group 1 received Irvingia extract (150 mg) twice daily, while group 2 was given a placebo. Both groups were on the same diet and physical exercise program.

- Baseline weight 215lbs
- After 4 weeks 207lbs
- After 8 weeks 197lbs
