DHEA is the most abundant of the more than 150 hormones produced by the adrenal gland & is the most abundant of all your body's hormones. If your body makes that much of it, it must be important and indeed it is.*
- Your body can convert DHEA into estrogen or testosterone as needed.*
- DHEA is more active in the brain than it is in any other organ in the body. It helps to build up brain cells & to make more protein available to the brain.*
- DHEA increases the production of interleukin-2, an important component of the immune system.*
- It enhances immune resistance to viral & bacterial action.*
- It improves thyroid function by about 10%.*
- Interacts with GABA receptors in the brain.*
- Increases bone formation & reduces bone breakdown.*
- In studies increased the average hip bone density significantly after 12 months of use.*
- Inhibits platelet clumping & risk for blood clot formation.*
DHEA levels drop significantly in most people after age 35. Elderly people sometimes have almost no DHEA.*

Increased levels of cortisol, together with decreased DHEA levels is often seen in insulin insensitivity, in women with polycystic ovaries, with increased LDL cholesterol, abdominal obesity and increased risk for type II diabetes.*
There is a rapidly expanding body of research suggesting DHEA may be helpful for preventing & treating a wide variety of medical conditions. For all those details see the books on DHEA in the book section.*
